Belonging, Empathy, Acceptance, Connectedness, Opportunity, and Negotiation (BEACON) is a rubric developed by Dr. Suzette Garay, Dr. Jenny Gough, and Dr. Stephanie Jo Kent to serve as a framework for curriculum revision in Interpreter Education Programs. The thrust of a BEACON-inspired curriculum is to invest in long-term relationships with diverse Deaf consumers by cultivating appreciation of the vast range of signing/communicative styles, diverse cultural legacies and connections, and practices of empathy that provide an alternative to the privileged white lens.

Introduction to the BEACON Social Model of Interpreting

Dr Garay, Dr Gough and a third presenter, Renee Phillips, will record an ASL Coffee Chat on April 23rd; details are forthcoming.
